Set a Clear Definition of Installed
A Ledger Live desktop install should leave a supported application that can be located and opened through its normal system path. Ledger Wallet is the current label used by the publisher. A completed browser download or a disappearing setup window is only part of that result.
Use three checkpoints: the package is suitable and verified, the operating system accepts its installation, and the intended installed copy launches. Account discovery comes afterward. This order avoids troubleshooting a missing portfolio before the computer even has a working client.
Checkpoint One: The Package Is Ready
Match the system version and processor to the current release requirements, then obtain the package through Ledger’s desktop distribution page. Check that the browser finished saving it and that the object is not merely a temporary transfer.
Read any security notification before running the package. A missing file can reflect quarantine rather than a download that never started. Keep the source and warning details available so an integrity concern is investigated rather than disguised by repeated renamed downloads.
Checkpoint Two: Follow the System’s Installation Model
Windows
Run the supported Windows package in an ordinary user session and respond to justified system consent through the normal process. A workplace restriction needs its administrator’s review. Do not treat administrator execution as the default answer to incompatible software, a threat detection, or an unexplained signature problem.
macOS
For the desktop disk-image route, open the image and follow the application-copy instructions. Open the Applications destination afterward, rather than relying on a copy still inside the image. Apple store editions have their own distribution and update conditions.
Linux
The supported AppImage needs an appropriate user-controlled location, execution permission, and a compatible environment. A missing runtime and missing USB access are different issues. Neither is explained by starting the entire wallet as root.
Checkpoint Three: Launch the Intended Destination
Find the installed application directly and open one copy. Inspect its version if the interface permits it. Only then create or repair the shortcut you plan to use regularly. This prevents an old launcher from making a correct installation look unsuccessful.
If the first launch closes or remains blank, preserve that exact result. Ledger’s installation help provides the starting point for platform guidance. Do not combine every launch symptom into a single claim that the installer did nothing.
Move to Wallet Setup Without Replacing Existing Keys
Choose the path that reflects the real hardware situation. An already initialized Ledger can provide supported account information to the new installation. A genuinely new signer has a separate device setup procedure, with secrets created and confirmed on its own controls.
Keep phrase restoration separate from computer installation. A software setup form requesting the full recovery backup is not necessary to place the desktop program on disk. Local account names and preferences can be reconstructed after the interface is working.
Installation FAQ
Why do I see a welcome screen after installation?
This local instance may not yet have account entries. Use the matching existing device where appropriate instead of assuming the hardware needs to be initialized again.
Is uninstalling the old client always required?
Use the supported replacement procedure for the platform and actual problem. Understand data-removal options before turning a program replacement into a broader profile deletion.
When is the installation task complete?
Confirm a normal launch from the correct destination, then test the originally intended workflow separately. An installation can succeed while a later network or device operation still needs attention.
